Since Theodor Seuss Geisel’s birthday is coming up on March 2nd, I wanted to share these super cute Cat in the Hat cupcakes I made for a classroom celebration last year.

The hats and Thing 1/Thing 2 discs were made from homemade marshmallow fondant.  I rolled out red and white fondant fairly thin and cut little *donut* shapes with the big end of my piping tips. Then I stacked them on a bigger white disc with a bit of water to act as *glue* to look like hats.  A bit tedious, but I think they came out great!

The cupcakes were vanilla and chocolate, each one with an Oreo cookie surprise baked inside.  I piped on light blue vanilla buttercream to look like the crazy hair sported by Thing 1 and Thing 2 in the story.  I also added some red and white sprinkles just for fun!

This year Theodor Geisel fans celebrates his being 112 years young at heart…we love you Dr. Seuss!

It’s that time of year again….March Madness is almost here!  And here’s a rundown of the cookies, cupcakes and cake I’ve done for my son’s end-of-season parties the past few years.

These personalized basketball cookies were fun and the boys loved finding the cookie with their name.  (One boy in the class was a champion swimmer, so I made a special swimming cookie for him.)   They were simple round cutout sugar cookies with orange royal icing and black lines to make them look like basketballs.  The names were piped with white Royal icing.

The rest of the cookies were decorated with the team mascot name (“Dragons”) and colors (green and yellow).

The cupcakes are a mix of chocolate and vanilla cake with an Oreo cookie baked inside each one. Some were frosted with vanilla buttercream, others with cookies and cream buttercream (vanilla buttercream with crushed cookies mixed in). The team colors were green and yellow, so I used colored sprinkles around the edges and topped them with fondant basketballs and stars.  They were sure easier to serve than a cake and the kids loved them!

This cake I made last year…the boys wanted a basketball court and players this time.  It’s a 2-layer chocolate/vanilla  half-sheet cake (big) covered in vanilla buttercream.  The court, letters, and stars are cut from homemade marshmallow fondant.  I scored the court with a pizza cutter to look like boards and brushed on a thin coat of diluted brown food color to make it look like wood.  The players/hoop set I ordered from Amazon.   I made each star with a different player’s number.

Although we didn’t win many games, we had a great season and the kids had a ball (no pun intended :0).  Here’s to another great season and wrap up party!  Go Dragons!!

I made this cute little smash cake and cupcakes for darling Miss Mila’s 1st birthday last year.  Her party had a Minnie Mouse theme with pink and gold colors.

The smash cake was a 4″ vanilla cake with whipped cream rosettes in blush pink.  Loved the little 4″ cake, perfect size to smash! Cupcakes were vanilla and chocolate with vanilla bean buttercream. The bows and ears were made from homemade marshmallow fondant.

I also made some mouse ear and scalloped round cutout sugar cookies. They were iced with royal icing with some details like the numbers and bows made from homemade fondant.

Some of the cookies were wrapped and tied with a bow for favors.

Disney Descendants Birthday Cake

cookies and cream, cream cheese frosting, Disney Descendants, double chocolate cake, homemade marshmallow fondant, Italians cream cake, ombre buttercream, vanilla-bean frosting

I had never heard of Disney Descendants until asked to make this cake last October. The mom called and wanted a special cake for her daughter’s 7th birthday, which had a Disney Descendants theme. She didn’t want any of the Disney figures on the cake, but liked the red, pink, purple, black and neon green color scheme of the characters. I hand-cut the apple, plaque, letters and other details from homemade marshmallow fondant. The rolled fondant roses are made from Wilton red fondant.

The cake is 2-tier, chocolate cake with cookies cream filling (9″ tier) and Italian cream cake (6″ tier) and covered with vanilla buttercream (bottom) and cream cheese buttercream (top). The icing is colored to create an ombré effect going from darker to lighter, bottom to top. The bottom shell border and vines are piped with dark purple buttercream; the leaves are piped using neon green buttercream. I sprinkled some gold sanding sugar on top just to add some sparkle.

This cake was certainly a fun one to make….hope you had a terrific 7th birthday, Gianna!

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL!!

With Super Bowl 50 quickly approaching, thought I’d share some football fan cookies I made last year for an end-of-season flag football celebration.

Whether it’s the Panthers or Broncos (GO TEAM!) you’re rooting for this year, enjoy the game!  (Sorry, I grew up in Wyoming, Broncos were *our* team, too.  I still remember my dad giving us Orange Crush soda to drink while watching Super Bowl XII in 1978…unfortunately, the Broncos famous Orange Crush defense fell to the Cowboys 27-10 that year).

Side note: I can’t believe the Super Bowl is younger than I am…yuk.

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
