homemade marshmallow fondant, marble cake, vanilla buttercream gymnastics

This gymnastics cake for Grace’s 12th birthday was SOOO fun to make…mainly because the birthday girl designed it herself!  Great job, huh?

When her mom asked me to make it, she sent me a sketch Grace had made with the gymnast in the middle and medals all around.  I changed it up a bit by putting the gymnast on a balance beam and adding the circle and stars.  I ordered a Gymnast cookie cutter because I knew I’d never be able to cut it out by hand. The lime green image is cut with the cutter (I turned her from a handstand to the splitz); the black background image I cut with my trusty Exacto knife.

The cake is a 2-layer 9″x13″ chocolate/vanilla marble cake with buttercream icing and filling.  The details are all cut from homemade marshmallow fondant.

I love Grace’s color combo of lime green, light blue, and black–super cool!  I also love that the cake it totally unique to Grace–not another one like it in the world!

Hope you had a great birthday, Grace!!  I’ll make a cake for you anytime, especially if you design it yourself!!

Disney Frozen Cake, Cupcakes, and Cookies!

I’ve had the opportunity to create a number of Disney Frozen-themed treats this past year.

This one I made for Maria’s 7th birthday a few months ago…

frozen-cake-1

It’s a 2-tier 6″/8″ cake made from chocolate and vanilla layers and serves about 35 people.  It’s iced with vanilla buttercream and the snowflakes, letters, and number are cut from homemade marshmallow fondant.  The Frozen edible image I ordered online and cut to fit the bottom tier.

The cupcakes are vanilla and chocolate with a blue buttercream swirl, purple edible crystals, and a fondant snowflake.

I also did these personalized cookies earlier this spring for another Frozen celebration…

I packaged them up for Sophia, the birthday girl, to hand out at school as a special treat!

Hope you had great birthdays, Maria and Sophia!  I sure had fun making your treats!

Cardinal Mooney High School, graduation cookies, royal icing, sugar cookies

I made these graduation cookies for a boy who was graduating from Cardinal Mooney High School last spring.  The mom wanted Mooney colors (cardinal red and gold) in the shape of and “M” for Mooney and a graduation cap with tassels in the school colors.

The graduation caps were fairly time consuming as I had numerous steps and layers of royal icing that required drying time in between.

After drying, I packaged them up as favors for the graduation party.

Congratulations on your graduation, Jack!  Hope you enjoyed your cookies as much as I did making them!

Knitting-Themed Birthday Cake

homemade marshmallow fondant, knitting themed cake, raspberry mousse, sour cream almond cake, vanilla-bean frosting

I was contacted by the incoming President of a local knitting guild (WRKG–Western Reserve Knitting Guild) to create a cake for a guild birthday party celebration.  She wanted a simple half-sheet cake with a few knitting-themed details on top.

The cake is a sour cream almond cake with raspberry mousse filling and vanilla-bean buttercream.  The balls of yarn are made by covering little styrofoam balls with fondant extruded using my handy-dandy Walnut Hollow clay extruder.  I opted for styrofoam because a ball that size made entirely of fondant would have been too heavy.  It took some doing to get them to look realistic, but they turned out cute, I thought.

The knitting needles are wooden skewers painted with edible silver paint with end pieces made of grey fondant.  The buttons and letters are also made of homemade marshmallow fondant.

I used the guild’s color scheme of blue and yellow for the fondant details and the buttercream piped swirls and bottom border.

Happy birthday, WRKG!  I sure had fun creating your cake!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
