This was such a cute idea for siblings whose birthdays were being celebrated together…Sharks and Mermaids!  Mom, Emily, was clever… do the work to have 1 party with 2 celebrations for Elin (3) and Kyle (1) with a theme for both that work together.

Each 8″ cake was decorated with his/her own theme and had a few dozen matching cookies to make each child know that their birthday was special…smart thinking, Mom!

1-yr-old Kyle had a chocolate shark-themed cake with cookies and cream filling, rough-iced with ombre blue buttercream made to look like waves.  The fin, life preserver, letters, sea life, sharks, and other other details were made from homemade marshmallow fondant.  The bubbles were white buttercream piped on with a small round tip.

The shark, surfboard, and life preserver cookies matched the color scheme.

3-yr-old Elin’s mermaid cake was funfetti with vanilla buttercream, smooth-iced with turquoise, white and pale pink stripes.  The tail was molded from rice cereal, then covered in pink fondant and dusted with pearl dust.   The number 3 and other sea life were fondant…the sea plants were made by winding long strips of pink fondant around straws, letting them dry overnight, then carefully removing the straws once the fondant was set up.

Once the cake was iced and decorated, I added some fun shiny pearls to look like colored bubbles.

Elin also had her own sea-themed cookies.

This duo-themed birthday was sure fun to do…

Hope you had a great celebration, Elin and Kyle!

Loved doing this cute Sesame Street birthday cake for Reid! It started out as a 3-tiered cake, but Reid’s mom decided that 2-tier was large enough and I added the sign on top to give it that extra needed height.

sesame_st_cake_4The bottom 10″-tier is chocolate with cookies and cream filling and the 8″-tier is snickerdoodle cake with cinnamon buttercream between the layers.   The cake was smooth iced with buttercream and the details and images were all hand-cut from homemade marshmallow fondant.

Reid’s mom specifically wanted Elmo and the Cookie Monster to adorn his cake.  I loved the little details of the stars on wires, the tiny letters cut from fondant, and the multi-colored stripes….so festive and happy.  The cake just screams “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” don’t ya think?

I debated on adding homemade chocolate chip cookies around the bottom, but I had some extra tan fondant from another project, so I rolled it out thick, used a round cutter, pushed in some mini chocolate chips, and dusted the edges with cocoa powder to make them look “baked.”

I was really pleased with how they turned out.

This was SUCH a fun cake with so many cute details.  Hope you had a great 2nd birthday, Reid (and thanks for asking me to make it for him, Candee :0)!

Starbucks-themed Cake

Ok, so this was a strange request for a cake.

One of my regular (and best) customers wanted a special birthday cake for her daughter who happened to love iced coffee from Starbucks.  She initially wondered if I could put a cup of her daughter’s favorite drink right on the cake, but that made me very nervous (liquids and cake DO NOT mix).

So we decided on chocolate mousse in a Starbucks cup to be added right before she presented the cake (in the cup is homemade chocolate mousse with crushed Oreo cookies and whipped cream on top).

The 10″ cake is double-chocolate sour cream with cookies and cream filling and smooth-iced with vanilla-bean buttercream.  The modified Starbucks logo I hand cut from homemade marshmallow fondant, along with the other details.

The cake was certainly a fun challenge….happy birthday, Georgenne!

NY Yankee Jersey Cake and Cookies

I’ve made a birthday cake for this darling boy in my son’s class for the past few years.  The 13-yr-old is really amazing at baseball and basketball (to name only 2 of the sports at which he excels…he is really very talented) and a few years ago I did this Cavaliers basketball cake for his birthday. This past year he was really into the NY Yankees, so his mom ordered a personalised jersey cake and cookies.

The cake is a half-sheet cookies and cream cake cut to look like a jersey with a pattern similar to this jersey cake.  I frosted it in vanilla buttercream and added stripes cut from blue homemade fondant. I used letter cutters to cut out the name and birthday wish; the number 3 and the NY Yankees logo were hand-cut from blue fondant.

The baseball cookies were iced with white Royal icing with red lacing piped on for detail.

Happy 13th birthday, Anthony….I really enjoyed making your birthday treats again this year!

Disney Descendants Birthday Cake

I had never heard of Disney Descendants until asked to make this cake last October. The mom called and wanted a special cake for her daughter’s 7th birthday, which had a Disney Descendants theme. She didn’t want any of the Disney figures on the cake, but liked the red, pink, purple, black and neon green color scheme of the characters. I hand-cut the apple, plaque, letters and other details from homemade marshmallow fondant. The rolled fondant roses are made from Wilton red fondant.

The cake is 2-tier, chocolate cake with cookies cream filling (9″ tier) and Italian cream cake (6″ tier) and covered with vanilla buttercream (bottom) and cream cheese buttercream (top). The icing is colored to create an ombré effect going from darker to lighter, bottom to top. The bottom shell border and vines are piped with dark purple buttercream; the leaves are piped using neon green buttercream. I sprinkled some gold sanding sugar on top just to add some sparkle.

This cake was certainly a fun one to make….hope you had a terrific 7th birthday, Gianna!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
