Ok, so I’ve done so many boy-masculine-themed birthday cakes lately that it was really fun to get the call from Chloe’s mom asking for a pink ballet pointe shoes cake for Chloe’s 13th birthday.

I’ve made fondant shoes before, but never ballet slippers, so this was a new one for me.  I actually found a really terrific and detailed tutorial on Etsy that made them incredibly easy and surprisingly realistic-looking.  The only change I made was putting the support sticks through the bottom of pointe of the shoe rather than glued to the sole so the cake could be displayed from all sides. I even wrote the birthday girl’s name on the insole, kind of like the Danskin logo on really ballet slippers..

The cake was a chocolate and pink velvet alternating layers with vanila buttercream between the layers and covered with pink rosettes.  Wish I had a picture of it cut…

I loved doing the cake and the slippers were so feminine and delicate.

Happy Birthday, Chloe!  Hope you loved your cake as much as I loved making it for you!

Sushi Party Cookies

When Jasmine Monro (former-WFMJ news reporter and all-around fun girl!) asked me to make sushi-themed cookies for her sister’s sushi birthday party, I’ll admit I hadn’t done them for awhile (once a few years ago I made something similar, but didn’t take any pictures).  But within a few minutes of researching the Internet, I knew just what I was going to do to give the cookies the illusion of real sushi.

I started by cutting square and round sugar cookies and piped on Royal icing to make them look like shrimp and California rolls. The edge outlines were piped with dark green Royal icing to look like seaweed; the “rice” is made by sprinking white nonpareils and sprinkles on semi-wet Royal icing. The shrimp, fish and veggies were piped on top of the base white coat once it was almost dry.

They were fun to make and I love the illusion of real food.

Good luck in your new job, Jasmine!  The valley is going to miss you!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
