National Geographic and World Globe Cookies

I must say, this was an unusual request…A lovely lady contacted me via my FB page and asked if I could make a cookie that represented a Nat’l Geographic magazine cover and one that was a world globe.  “Of course,” I said, “Sure, I can do anything on a cookie” (yeah, right).

Luckily she wasn’t too specific on the cover details,  she just wanted it to be recognizable as a magazine cover.  So I did some research to figure out what I could do using royal icing to make the cookie look as similar as possible to one of the actual magazine covers.

I found a cover story about black holes and that was all I needed.  Starting with the iconic yellow border and using the wet-on-wet icing method, I was able to make the cookie look similar to the cover.  I did change the letter color to white as my white royal icing at the time was a better consistency for fine detail piping.

The globe cookies were fairly easy and fun…although the land masses aren’t exact (all you geography geeks out there, please don’t be too critical!).  I thought the little jets were a fun touch.

When I finally met Megan (the sweet young lady who ordered the cookies), she explained that they were for a book club party she was hosting.  The feature book was “A House in the Sky” by Amanda Linkhout, a memoir about a young girl who escaped a violent household by paging through issues of National Geographic and imagining herself visiting its exotic locales.  It’s definitely next on my “to read” list!

Thanks for the challenging and fun cookie order, Megan…I always love when I’m asked to create something different and unique!

Cinderella Cake and Cookies

Cinderella, double chocolate cake, fondant tiara, homemade marshmallow fondant, royal icing, vanilla-bean frosting

Finally got to make a tiara out of fondant for this adorable Cinderella cake!  I found a great tutorial by Rose Bakes awhile back and have been wanting to use it…

This is a 9″ and 6″ tiered cake with a double chocolate cake on the bottom tier and sour cream almond cake on the top tier and vanilla-bean buttercream filling between the layers.  Both cakes are iced with vanilla-bean buttercream tinted blue.

The tiara and name plaque are made from homemade marshmallow fondant. The gold on the tiara and letters is painted on using a mixture of gold luster dust and lemon extract…a somewhat tedious task, but one that gives a WOW pop of gold.

The blue rosettes piped on the bottom tier are so pretty and feminine. Abby’s mom provided the adorable glass slipper I taped onto the cake board with double stick tape.

She also ordered a mix of Cinderella-themed cookies.

I love the “Have Courage, Be Kind…” quote she asked to have piped on one of the plaque cookies.

While it can be done, I really hate to pipe detailed designs directly onto iced cookies (too much opportunity to mess up a perfectly good cookie).   To avoid doing this, I used stiff royal icing to pipe a bunch of slippers and tiaras onto waxed paper, let them dry, painted the tiaras and added some detail, and then transferred them to the cookie while the base coat was still a bit wet.

Hope you had a terrific 5th birthday, Abby…it was sure fun making your cake and cookies!!

Kate Spade Birthday Cookies

Kate Spade cookies, royal icing, sugar cookies

I must admit that when I was asked to make Kate Spade-themed cookies, I had to look it up.  I’m not much into fashion and didn’t know who Kate Spake was or the style of her clothes (she’s a fashion designer, in case you didn’t know either).  But once I got into it, I really liked the styles and enjoyed designing the cookies.

For the cookie platter, I went with assorted cutouts decorated in black, white, and hot pink royal icing with dots, stripes and gold accents.

I loved the way the swirl rosettes turned out.  I piped them with a  Wilton 1M tip and really stiff royal icing.

This cookie assortment was ordered by a sweet grand-daughter for her grandmother’s 80th birthday. Her mom picked them up and flew with them all the way to Florida, much to Grandma Corinne’s surprise.  It was really neat to be a part of such a special celebration!

Disney Descendants, double chocolate cake, homemade marshmallow fondant, royal icing, Sour cream vanilla cake, sugar cookies, vanilla buttercream

Loved making this cake and cookie combo for a sweet little girl who turned 6 this past weekend…her party theme was Disney Descendants.

I must admit I didn’t know much about the Descendants movie and characters until I did a Descendants cake for Gianna last year .

Arianna’s cake was a 2-layer, 10″ square sour cream vanilla and double chocolate cake, iced with vanilla bean buttercream.  The details are a combo of homemade marshmallow fondant and royal icing.

I piped the heart, crown and Maleficent horns onto waxed paper and let them dry overnight, then transferred them to the iced cake….it was infinitely easier than cutting those small details out of fondant… The lettering , mirror, and apple were hand cut from fondant.

It’s time for school colors and graduation caps!  These cute cutout cookies I made as a mail order for a graduate in Arizona who’s school colors are yellow and black.  Not sure of the school name, but it’s acronym is “BPHS”…

They are very similar to the cookies I made for a Cardinal Mooney grad last year….

Congrats to all the graduates out there…you’ve worked hard for this, ENJOY!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
