A Burrito Cake….really?

Ok, just have to do a quick post on this cake as it was SO fun to do.  Maria (she’s the greatest!) ordered it for her godson’s birthday, and I was so excited to do it for her…Realistic food cakes fascinate me (I’m a detail person), so this one was super cool!

I wish I would have taken more shots of the construction and detail steps (just so I can do it again if needed), but I didn’t, sorry :(.

I started with a 12×12 square chocolate cake, cut in half and stacked (with caramel turtle filling) and carved it into a burrito shape.

After rough-icing the carved cake with vanilla buttercream, I chilled it for an hour or so and then covered it with ivory-colored fondant fashioned to look like a tortilla.  Diluted brown food color painted on the outside made it look toasted. Wrapping the bottom half with foil made it look even more realistic.

The food details (rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, chips) are made from homemade marshmallow fondant (check out this video from the Artisan Cake Company to see how it’s done) and the guac and sour cream are green and white buttercream.

Hope you were surprised with your burrito cake, Antoni, it was sure fun to make!

I had the privilege of creating this cake for a nice young man who had recently graduated from a local high school.

Grad Cake 20180003

This 2-tiered cake has an 9″ chocolate tier and a 6″ confetti tier iced with vanilla buttercream.  I used homemade marshmallow fondant for the name plates and a topped it with plastic grad cap and paper “scroll” I bought online.

It’s always so nice to see the cakes with their intended recipients.

Hope you had a great party, Hayden…

Congrats on your graduation!

This was truly a “change of life” cake.  Not for me, but for Ron,  the cake’s recipient.  A few months ago, his coworker asked me to make goodies for his special going away party.

Ron was actually just leaving one job to embark on a new career….to be a finish carpenter.

fondant x-box controller cake topper, Fortnite cake, fortnite cake toppers, gamer cake, homemade marshmallow fondant, vanilla buttercream

Ok, with all of the news about Fortnite right now, I just remembered that I did this cake for an avid Fornite gamer (is there any other kind??) a few weeks ago….

fortnite cake0000

When Savva’s mom called to ask me to make it for his 11th birthday, we both Googled examples of Fortnite cakes and there really wasn’t much out there because the game is so new…apparently it’s only in Beta format at the moment.

So I got my 12-yr-old involved and he got me up to speed.   He advised me  that the cake absolutely HAD to include a ramp, pick axe, spike trap, first aid supplies, steel, brick, and a purple bazooka gun (?).  “Oh, and throw in a treasure chest, too, Mom!”

Ok, so here were go….this is a half sheet double layer cake iced with chocolate buttercream with Oreo cookie “dirt” on the sides/top and buttercream grass.  All of the details are made from homemade marshmallow fondant.

I also molded an X-box controller from Rice Krispie treats, covered it in fondant and added details to look semi-real.  The Fortnite logo on the from is hand-cut from fondant. And oh, and the “rock” on which the treasure chest is balanced is also made from rice cereal treats covered in fondant (thank god for rice cereal treats!!)…

Hope this gives you some inspiration for the time in your upcoming future when your teen or pre-teen asks you for a Fortnite cake!!

Here’s wishing you a great birthday, Savva….loved making your cake!!

Eagle Scout Cake for J.J.

Eagle Scout cake, homemade marshmallow fondant, Sour cream vanilla cake

  • I was extremely honored when asked by a dear friend to create this cake for her son’s Eagle Scout celebration.  Making Eagle scout is such a huge accomplishment for any young man and deserves a special celebration cake…

Eagle Scout_cake0001

Before I go too much farther, let me say that the Eagle topper is an actual statue provided by the client that I added to the finished cake…I didn’t make it.

But all of the other details are made from homemade marshmallow fondant.

The 2-tiered (8″-6″) vanilla sour cream cake is smooth-iced with vanilla buttercream.  The draped flag, gold cording, and fleur-de-lis symbols are made from fondant.

I had had to create a special platform covered in fondant with extra support on the top tier to hold the heavy Eagle statue, which was placed on the cake at the venue.  It made it easy to remove the topper in order to serve the cake.

Congrats again on the incredible accomplishment, J.J., it was an honor to make your cake!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
