Fleetwood Mac is BACK!!  And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, it proves I’m just way too old.

My dear friend Missy asked me to make a cake for her friend’s 40th birthday.

She wanted a replica of the birthday girl’s favorite album cover, this artistic rendition of the iconic 1977 Fleetwood Mac “Rumors” album.

It took some time and a few sharp exacto blades to cut the image out, but I think I got it pretty close.  Luckily, it was a fairly simple design.

I really love this fondant image-layering technique. It’s kind of like putting a puzzle together from the front to back to get the 2-dimenional image to look kind of 3-D.  The hardest part is visualizing the layers as separate pieces

The cake is a 10″ square key lime cake filled with lime curd and iced with cream cheese buttercream.

Another blast to the past was for Missy’s 40th birthday.  Her brother wanted the theme to be her favorite late-1980s group, New Kids On the Block.

For this one, I used an icing image and added fondant details.  Much easier than cutting each piece out separately!

Happy belated 40th birthdays, Ladies!!

I had fun making these unique and different cakes for you!  :0)

I had never heard of Disney Descendants until asked to make this cake last October. The mom called and wanted a special cake for her daughter’s 7th birthday, which had a Disney Descendants theme. She didn’t want any of the Disney figures on the cake, but liked the red, pink, purple, black and neon green color scheme of the characters. I hand-cut the apple, plaque, letters and other details from homemade marshmallow fondant. The rolled fondant roses are made from Wilton red fondant.

The cake is 2-tier, chocolate cake with cookies cream filling (9″ tier) and Italian cream cake (6″ tier) and covered with vanilla buttercream (bottom) and cream cheese buttercream (top). The icing is colored to create an ombré effect going from darker to lighter, bottom to top. The bottom shell border and vines are piped with dark purple buttercream; the leaves are piped using neon green buttercream. I sprinkled some gold sanding sugar on top just to add some sparkle.

This cake was certainly a fun one to make….hope you had a terrific 7th birthday, Gianna!

Birds and Tree Quilt Cake

I’ve done so  many fun and interesting cakes these past few weeks, I haven’t had a free minute to do a post.  Here is one of my favorites.  Mostly because the inspiration was a quilt block designed by the woman for which I was making the cake (second picture).

Ginger designed the quilt block and was recently accepted into a quilters training program as a teacher, so the local quilting guild to which my Mother-In-Law belongs was throwing a party in her honor. Mom asked me to make this cake for the celebration.

Since the size was right, I essentially used the quilt block as a template and cut the bird and trees the same size as they fit the cake perfectly.  It’s a chocolate 12×16″ cake with cream cheese buttercream filling and iced with vanilla buttercream.  The bird and tree details are all hand-cut from homemade marshmallow fondant. The letters and flowers are cut using fondant cutters; the borders and vines are buttercream.  The color scheme was purple and green.

Congrats, Ginger!!  I really enjoyed making your cake!

Another graduation cake, this one for a small gathering celebrating a PSHS grad.

This is a 3-layer 8-inch round  with chocolate and sour cream almond cake, filled with raspberry mousse and iced with vanilla cream cheese buttercream. I added a fondant cap, stars, and twists in Poland blue and white.   The musical notes were made from melting chocolate piped onto waxed paper ahead of time and left to harden before adding to the cake.  The letters were also cut from homemade marshmallow fondant.

Love Bird Celebration Cake

I recently made this cake for a lovely friend in celebration of her marriage…and her new name!  Her wedding theme was love birds, so I made these out of homemade marshmallow fondant and decorated the top with flowers and vines. The 10-inch cake is 4-layers of double-chocolate and sour cream almond with cream cheese icing between the layers. The sides are done in vertical buttercream ruffles using a leaf tip, which kind of gives the cake the look of a cozy little nest.

Congratulations, Linda!  May you enjoy many happy years with your new love bird!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
