Ice Cream & Sprinkles Birthday Party!

Ok, this theme for a little girl’s birthday party is just TOO CUTE!

The client called and asked if I would help her with an ice-cream-and-sprinkles-themed 3rd birthday party for her adorable daughter, Mackenzie.  She needed coordinating cake, cake pops, cupcakes, and cookies to serve about 70 people (whew!).

Her color scheme included mint green and light pink, so I took those colors and got to work.

The treats for the 70-or-so guests included this tiered cake (8″ pink velvet and 10″ vanilla bean)….

cake pops made with mini ice cream cones (so adorable!)….

cupcakes baked in cones with creamy swirls of multi-colored buttercream….

and cookies.

The tiered drip cake was so fun to do…and so popular right now! The melting ice cream cone topper is simply a huge cake pop made in a sugar cone.  I filled the cone with cake and drizzled it with pink melting chocolate. I also inserted a cake pop stick to ensure it would sit securely on the cake.

The pink drip is white chocolate ganache with pink gel color, smoothed over the top and dripped down the sides of the cake.  And, of course, sprinkles (actually sequins)….LOTS of sprinkles!

I covered the bottom of the top tier with MORE sprinkles and a ruffly buttercream border.  The #3 on top and name plate on the side are cut from homemade marshmallow fondant.

The cupcakes and cake pops are made from the same cake flavors as the cake. Cupcakes are baked in regular-sized cake cones, which is always a little more difficult than it seems as they take so long to bake (about 2x the batter as a normal cupcake) and the cone has a tendency to absorb the moisture of the cupcake after it bakes and gets a little soft.  But cover them with a healthy swirl of silky buttercream, and all is good…

Instead of a stick, the cake pops are made in mini-cones and then dipped in white chocolate melts tinted mint green and pale pink–so cute!  These we’re actually much easier than a normal cake pop as the drips down the sides added to the melting ice cream cone look :0).

This was such a fun themed party, and the party set-up at the client’s house was fabulous (wish I had a good picture, but they all turned out too dark).

Hope you had a great 3rd birthday, Mackenzie!  I loved making your treats!!

anniversary cake, homemade marshmallow fondant, Swiss Meringue Buttercream, Vanilla-bean cake

I had the extreme honor to make this 50th anniversary cake for a friend whose parents were celebrating this golden milestone in their lives…it always brings me pleasure to create special occasion cakes that mean so much to those who get to enjoy them.

The cake was a 12″x12″ square vanilla bean cake filled and iced with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream and decorated with buttercream scrolls and dots .

The “P” monogram and “50” plaque were made from homemade marshmallow fondant.  I used cutters and pale yellow fondant to cut out the letters and numbers and then painted them with edible gold paint before securing to the fondant plaques with sugar glue.

In the end, I added a few white sugar pearls to dress it up a bit.

Happy 50th Anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. P, it was an honor to make a cake for such a special occasion!!

cat in the hat, double chocolate cake, Dr. Seuss, homemade marshmallow fondant, Oreo Cookie filling, vanilla buttercream, Vanilla-bean cake

Since Theodor Seuss Geisel’s birthday is coming up on March 2nd, I wanted to share these super cute Cat in the Hat cupcakes I made for a classroom celebration last year.

The hats and Thing 1/Thing 2 discs were made from homemade marshmallow fondant.  I rolled out red and white fondant fairly thin and cut little *donut* shapes with the big end of my piping tips. Then I stacked them on a bigger white disc with a bit of water to act as *glue* to look like hats.  A bit tedious, but I think they came out great!

The cupcakes were vanilla and chocolate, each one with an Oreo cookie surprise baked inside.  I piped on light blue vanilla buttercream to look like the crazy hair sported by Thing 1 and Thing 2 in the story.  I also added some red and white sprinkles just for fun!

This year Theodor Geisel fans celebrates his being 112 years young at heart…we love you Dr. Seuss!

It’s that time of year again….March Madness is almost here!  And here’s a rundown of the cookies, cupcakes and cake I’ve done for my son’s end-of-season parties the past few years.

basketball-iced-cookies-3

These personalized basketball cookies were fun and the boys loved finding the cookie with their name.  (One boy in the class was a champion swimmer, so I made a special swimming cookie for him.)   They were simple round cutout sugar cookies with orange royal icing and black lines to make them look like basketballs.  The names were piped with white Royal icing.

The rest of the cookies were decorated with the team mascot name (“Dragons”) and colors (green and yellow).

The cupcakes are a mix of chocolate and vanilla cake with an Oreo cookie baked inside each one. Some were frosted with vanilla buttercream, others with cookies and cream buttercream (vanilla buttercream with crushed cookies mixed in). The team colors were green and yellow, so I used colored sprinkles around the edges and topped them with fondant basketballs and stars.  They were sure easier to serve than a cake and the kids loved them!

This cake I made last year…the boys wanted a basketball court and players this time.  It’s a 2-layer chocolate/vanilla  half-sheet cake (big) covered in vanilla buttercream.  The court, letters, and stars are cut from homemade marshmallow fondant.  I scored the court with a pizza cutter to look like boards and brushed on a thin coat of diluted brown food color to make it look like wood.  The players/hoop set I ordered from Amazon.   I made each star with a different player’s number.

Although we didn’t win many games, we had a great season and the kids had a ball (no pun intended :0).  Here’s to another great season and wrap up party!  Go Dragons!!

I made this cute little smash cake and cupcakes for darling Miss Mila’s 1st birthday last year.  Her party had a Minnie Mouse theme with pink and gold colors.

The smash cake was a 4″ vanilla cake with whipped cream rosettes in blush pink.  Loved the little 4″ cake, perfect size to smash! Cupcakes were vanilla and chocolate with vanilla bean buttercream. The bows and ears were made from homemade marshmallow fondant.

I also made some mouse ear and scalloped round cutout sugar cookies. They were iced with royal icing with some details like the numbers and bows made from homemade fondant.

Some of the cookies were wrapped and tied with a bow for favors.

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
