I had the privilege of creating this cake for a nice young man who had recently graduated from a local high school.

Grad Cake 20180003

This 2-tiered cake has an 9″ chocolate tier and a 6″ confetti tier iced with vanilla buttercream.  I used homemade marshmallow fondant for the name plates and a topped it with plastic grad cap and paper “scroll” I bought online.

It’s always so nice to see the cakes with their intended recipients.

Hope you had a great party, Hayden…

Congrats on your graduation!

It’s graduation season and here is one of my favorites done for a young girl graduating from high school and pursuing an education in graphic arts…

Her mother wanted a simple grad hat with a shout out to photography, Alyssa’s passion.

It’s an 8-inch confetti cake, filled and frosted with vanilla buttercream,  The base of the mortar board and the camera are rice cereal treats covered with black fondant.  The flat top of the cap is a piece of cardboard covered with fondant to give it support.  All of the other details were made using homemade marshmallow fondant.

She also had graduation caps and diploma cookies with her colors, coral and gold, for the event.

Congrats on your graduation, Alyssa!

I really enjoyed doing your sweet treats!

Graduation Cake and Cookie Ideas

graduation cake, graduation cookies

It’s almost graduation season, so start planning those parties!  I really can’t believe how huge graduation parties are here in Ohio…much bigger than celebrations where I grew up.

These are some examples of half-sheet cakes that are a good party-size and can serve a bunch when made with 2 layers.

These 2 graduation cakes I did for a Poland Seminary High School graduate last year who was going to Ohio State in the fall.

This Cardinal Mooney cake I did a few years ago (before I discovered how cutting letters out of fondant is much cleaner … and straighter :)).  The graduate was going to the University of Dayton…

These are full sheet cakes, which I don’t make often as they are difficult to manage in my regular-sized fridge.  I love this black and yellow theme with swirls and stars.  It really says “Let’s CELEBRATE…you’ve done it!!”

For this one I made a 3-d mortar board and decorated it with stars, sprinkles and fondant twists. Here’s the post that describes it in more detail.

This cake is for a smaller celebration…followed by a group of specialty cakes.

banana cake, bavarian cream filling, double chocolate cake, football, graduation cake, graduation cap, homemade marshmallow fondant, hummingbird cake, jersey, raspberry mousse filling, vanilla buttercream

I have a wonderful client who’s ordered many cakes, cupcakes and cookies from me in the past few years.  This last spring, she came to me with an order for her son’s graduation party…3 cakes with a football theme.  She sent me a picture of a cake display of 3 cakes showing a graduation cap, a jersey and a football. sports-football-graduation-cakes-2 So I got to work… The football I made from chocolate cake with raspberry filling baked in a Wilton football-shaped pan.  I smooth iced it with chocolate buttercream…then when it had crusted a bit, pressed a textured paper towel over it to give it that “pigskin-like” look. The letters, stripes and seams are homemade marshmallow fondant.  The letters I cut with cutters I had from a cookie making kit, the stripes with this neat-o Sugarcraft ribbon cutter like this one, and the stitching I made with a  Walnut Hollow clay extruder I got just for this order (but have used a bunch since). sports-football-graduation-cakes-3 sports-football-graduation-cakes-6 The graduation cap was a 6″ banana cake filled with bavarian cream filling.  I cut an 8″ square out of stiff cardboard and covered it with homemade fondant colored blue, added tassels made from blue fondant (again, extruded with my neat-o extruder) and a button on top. The cake is iced with blue vanilla buttercream colored to match the fondant.  The letters and numbers are cut from white fondant with these easy-to-use Wilton letter cutters. sports-football-graduation-cakes-9 sports-football-graduation-cakes-7 sports-football-graduation-cakes-4The jersey is made from a half-sheet pineapple mandarin cake (sometimes referred to as Hummingbird cake) with a pineapple cream filling.  I cut it to resemble a jersey with a template I made from cardboard.  It’s iced with the same blue buttercream as the cap and the letters are cut with the same cutters as on the football.  The “22” I hand cut using a template with a “collegiate font” to look more like sports numbers.

I put the cakes on separate boards for ease of handling and transport.  The larger board is a foam-core board I covered with blue poster board. The congrats message on the board I cut using Tappit Funky Letter cutters, glued down with a little piping gel. That’s about it!  Hope you had a great party, Nicke, I sure had fun making your cakes! sports-football-graduation-cakes-1

Yellow & Black Graduation Cake

I created this graduation cake for the daughter of our neighbor who graduated this spring.  Her colors were yellow and black and she didn’t really have a design in mind, so I got busy coming up with one.

I was looking for something different than a traditional flower border for this cake.(Full disclosure here–I really hate doing buttercream flowers. I mean I HATE doing them because I CAN’T do them…not well, at least.  I also feel they are a bit outdated for graduation cakes for girls…just my humble opinion…in case you care :0).

I was thinking, instead, of something somewhat whimsical that would cover a lot of space on this large cake.  I opted for swirls and dots in yellow and white buttercream and yellow and black fondant stars.  I finished the bottom with a traditional shell border, just to ground the whole thing and give it a finished look.yellow-black-graduation-cake-10

The graduation cap topper and plaque I ordered online here.    I needed something bigger than the usual toppers you see (which are typically 3-4″ square caps) for such big cake (this one measures about 6-7″ on a side).

The graduate told me she loved the look of the cake as well as it’s uniqueness (she’d never seen one like it).  That’s what you get when you order a custom cake…Never 2 the same!

It was an honor to make your cake, Markella!  I hope you enjoyed it and I was happy to be a part of your celebration!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
