2nd Birthday Construction Cake

Ok, this construction cake was SOOOOO fun to do!  It takes me back a few years to when I used to make cute vehicle and construction birthday cakes for my boys when they were younger.

My firstborn just turned 16, which means no more fun cakes like this for me….So I’m always happy when someone orders one!

Construction 2 Cake0000

This cake for Luke was a 15″x 11″ single-layer confetti cake with vanilla buttercream.  After the initial crumb coat and a smooth green layer of buttercream was done, I sketched out where I wanted the# 2 to go and iced that part with chocolate buttercream.  I then carefully sprinkled the still-soft chocolate buttercream with crushed Oreo cookies to look like dirt.

Once the road was done, I piped green buttercream grass around the #2 and as a border, arranged the machines, and added the candy rocks to finish up the construction site.

Such a fun cake to do…Hope you had a terrific 2nd birthday, Luke!

I had the privilege of creating this cake for a nice young man who had recently graduated from a local high school.

Grad Cake 20180003

This 2-tiered cake has an 9″ chocolate tier and a 6″ confetti tier iced with vanilla buttercream.  I used homemade marshmallow fondant for the name plates and a topped it with plastic grad cap and paper “scroll” I bought online.

It’s always so nice to see the cakes with their intended recipients.

Hope you had a great party, Hayden…

Congrats on your graduation!

Marilyn Monroe Edible Image Cake

A client requested a birthday cake for her daughter who turned 18 last weekend. Since she (the daughter) loves Marilyn Monroe, we decided on this design to evoke retro Hollywood.  The edible image of Marilyn Monroe is printed on an icing sheet, which lends itself well to the black and white photo. The cake is a 15″x18″ 2-layer cake (double-chocolate and confetti) covered in caramel buttercream and decorated with black and silver fondant stars, white pearls, and silver sanding sugar.

I’ve got to say, I haven’t met many 18-yr-olds who are interested in iconic Hollywood stars.  It’s refreshing to find one with such unique taste!  Hope you had a great birthday, Cassandra, I really enjoyed designing your cake!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
