Quilt-Themed Cookies

My mother-in-law is a big quilter…I mean SERIOUS quilter here, folks.  She has drawers, closets, ROOMS full of fabric and AMAZING quilts hung all over her house.  We all have handmade heirloom quilts on our beds and beautiful quilted wall-hangings…doesn’t get any better than that!

It only makes sense that I make some quilt-themed cookies for one of her gatherings of quilter friends.

These are delicious, buttery cutout sugar cookies frosted with a white vanilla royal icing glaze.  While the icing was drying, I added brightly-colored details to make the cookies look like quilted fabric.

The technique used to create the designs on most of them was “wet-on-wet.” While the white basecoat was still wet, other colors were layered on top. Sometimes I’d drag a toothpick through the wet icing to make different patterns. Others were made by icing one half of the cookie in one color, letting it dry, and then icing the rest with alternate color(s). It took some time, but it was almost theraputic to create each different design.    quilt-cookies-7 quilt-cookies-8  quilt-cookies-10

They were fun to make (albeit time-consuming, lots of drying between steps) and my MIL really appreciated the effort!

Anything for my favorite quilter…Happy quilting (and munching), Ladies!

Cake pops, Casino, double chocolate cake, marshmallow fondant, royal icing, salted caramel filling, Sugar cookie, vanilla-bean frosting, Vegas party

I did these back in April and never had time to write a post. I was asked to come up with a dessert for my school’s annual fundraiser, the theme was “Night in Vegas.”  We initially considered doing cookies made to look like poker chips and playing cards along with cake pops, but finally decided on poker chip cookies and cupcakes with a red/white/black color scheme (see pictures at the end taken at the event).

The cupcakes were double chocolate cake filled with salted caramel and iced with a vanilla-bean buttercream swirl with red/white sprinkles.  The sugar cookies were iced with fresh lemon royal icing and a fondant circle in the center.

It was a terrific party and a great fundraiser for the school.  Many kudos to the committee who worked tirelessly to organize it all…great job, HFS Reverse Raffle team!!  I was proud to be a part of it!

Kids’ Quotes on a Sugar Cookie

Baking and Confections, Cookie, glaze, quotes, royal icing, Sugar cookie, teacher gift idea

Ok, I must admit these turned out pretty darned cute.  My son’s teacher was retiring this year and I wanted to make a special treat for the class on the last day. So I quietly polled the kids to ask their favorite thing or something special they wanted to tell their beloved teacher.  I put each sentiment on a 4″ sugar cookie in blue royal icing after coating the cookie in a white glaze.

Since I knew the treats would be devoured as soon as I walked into the classroom, I took a picture and presented the teacher with a 5×7 glossy so she could keep their heartfelt good wishes forever.  The teacher was very touched and the kids had a ball finding their quotes….and eating them, too!

Special Agent Oso Birthday Cookies

A customer asked for “Special Agent Oso” cookies for her son’s 4th birthday party.  (If you’re like me, you may not know that “Oso” is a children’s show on Disney).  So I got down to business and, using the trusty internet, figured out how best to make the birthday boy happy!  I baked 4″ round sugar cookies and covered them with a vanilla glaze tinted blue.  The paw prints are cut from homemade fondant using a round cookie cutter and the large end of a piping tip (for the smaller circles).   The number is also cut from fondant.  The birthday boy immediately knew what they were, a Special Agent Oso “clue”… so I guess I did my job!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
