Ok, so I love these water color cakes and am excited whenever someone orders one because they are so fun to do.  The other neat thing is  that they are so unique…just like the person I’m making them for.  No 2 cakes are the same.

I’ve had the privilege of making beautiful Audrey’s birthday cakes for a few years now and it seems that she always has a specific design in mind.  Colors, look, style, everything….which is fantastic for someone so young.

She knows exactly what she wants and it always looks great.

This one is a 5″ and 7″ 2-tiered cake with chocolate cake and marshmallow cream filling. The water color icing is turquoise, silver and white. And she wanted a silver fondant “15” on top.  The silver and black plaque and name are also made from fondant.

I loved the way it turned out, classic and unique–just like Audrey.

Hope you had a very special 15th birthday, Audrey, I loved making your cake!

I haven’t shared a cake creation for awhile, so thought I’d post this cute one I did a few months ago for a bridal shower….

miss_to_mrs_1

The bride’s aunt ordered it for her niece and showed me a picture of a cake with a simple bride’s silhouette all in buttercream.

I embellished my design to make it a bit more dramatic with the silhouette hand-cut from black fondant and overlaid with buttercream swirls and flowers.

The cake was a half sheet double layer banana cake with chocolate mousse filling, smooth-iced with vanilla-bean buttercream.

The inscription is cut from fondant using letter cutters with 2 different font types.

Congrats to the Bride-to-Be, I hope you liked your cake!!

Lego Birthday Cake

My sons are 11 and 9 at the moment and there are probably over a million and a half Legos spread around our house, so I can’t believe I haven’t made a Lego cake until this week!  A friend of a friend asked me to do a Lego birthday cake for her son’s birthday and I gladly obliged!

This cake was SO FUN!  I started with a 10″- round double-chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and covered it with vanilla-bean buttercream in lemon yellow.  The large Lego figure, larger Lego bricks, and the round he’s sitting on are fondant, as is the name plate on the front.  I also covered a small loaf-sized cake with blue fondant and added fondant “studs” on the top (that’s the technical Lego-geek term for the little bumps on a Lego bricks that holds them together–who knew?!).  The smaller Lego bricks are candy.  I wanted to add some height, so I put the fondant stars and “9” on wires.  The customer brought me a bunch of her son’s favorite mini figures to go around the cake (my boys thought they were the “coolest ever” mini figs).

lego-birthday-cake-10All in all, this was a SUPER fun one to do.  If I get more calls to make Lego cakes and cupcakes, I’m going to find a brick maker so I can make my own from fondant.

Hope you had a great birthday, Carter!  I really enjoyed making your cake!!

pshs-graduation-cake-4I made this graduation cake for the darling daughter of a dear friend who is graduating from high school this year.  She is very musical (among her other talents) and wanted a musical-themed cake with flowers.

This is a half-sheet double layer cake (chocolate and vanilla) with a fresh strawberry filling, iced with vanilla-bean cream cheese buttercream The notes are made from melted chocolate piped ahead of time onto waxed paper and added at the end.  The graduation cap and scroll are made from homemade marshmallow fondant with royal icing piped on.  Some flowers are buttercream and others I cut from fondant.

It was such a pleasure to do this cake for Henriette’s graduation…She is an outstanding girl who is very adventuresome and excels in so many things.  We wish her all the best in her coming years of college…Good luck, Henriette!!

Graduation Cake with Mortar Board

15 Sunday Jun 2014

candy melt cap, fondant, graduation cake, Mortar Board, Pink Velvet Cake, raspberry mousse filling, vanilla-bean frosting

Well, it’s graduation season and I’ve been making cakes!  Cakes for big parties (250 people!) and small family gatherings.  It’s so fun to personalize them for each graduate…There are so many possibilities.

This full-sheet cake I made for the graduating daughter of our neighbor.  She asked for a pink champagne cake with raspberry mousse filling, iced with vanilla-bean buttercream–delicious combo!  There was no particular theme, just a big celebration cake with primary colors for family and friends (and they do have a BIG family…10 kids!).

Since it was such a big cake, I wanted to add some dimension.  The large graduation cap is made from a smaller 4″-round cake frosted with black buttercream.  The top of the mortar board is made from black candy melts that I piped onto waxed paper and cut to a square after it had chilled for a few minutes (thanks to Liz Larson for the video tutorial on this: theartoffrosting.blogspot.com).  The tassel, smaller cap, stars, and twists are made from homemade marshmallow fondant.

It was a fun celebration cake to feed a crowd.  I hope you liked it, Anna Marie…Good luck at school in the fall!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
