Loved making this custom Poland Bulldogs cake for my favorite little Bulldog baseball player, Aiden!

His mother has ordered almost a dozen cakes from me over the years (here’s the last one I did for her older son), each one more fun than the last to create, and this one was no exception!

This 2-tiered, 6″-8″ cake is chocolate filled with chocolate mousse on the bottom (with chopped Hershey bars mixed into the mousse…YUM!) and hummingbird cake on the top.  Both tiers are covered with homemade marshmallow fondant.

The bulldog is hand-cut from fondant using my Kopy Kake projector (love that thing!).  Using a layering technique I learned about in a Craftsy class by Corrie’s Cakes, I was able to make the 2-D image look more 3-D.

Love this technique as it makes the image really POP out from the cake…putting it together is almost like creating a puzzle.  Once I figured out the layering, details were drawn on using a food-safe marker and the pieces were “glued” together with watered down piping gel.

All of the other details and lettering are cut using cutters from fondant.

I also made a few baseball cookies to go along with the cake…

Happy Birthday, Aiden….hope you had a great one!!

“Miss to Mrs.” Bridal Shower Celebration Cake

I haven’t shared a cake creation for awhile, so thought I’d post this cute one I did a few months ago for a bridal shower….

The bride’s aunt ordered it for her niece and showed me a picture of a cake with a simple bride’s silhouette all in buttercream.

I embellished my design to make it a bit more dramatic with the silhouette hand-cut from black fondant and overlaid with buttercream swirls and flowers.

The cake was a half sheet double layer banana cake with chocolate mousse filling, smooth-iced with vanilla-bean buttercream.

The inscription is cut from fondant using letter cutters with 2 different font types.

Congrats to the Bride-to-Be, I hope you liked your cake!!

Vintage Baseball Cake

almond frosting, chocolate mousse, double chocolate cake, Italians cream cake, vanilla buttercream, vintage baseball cake; homemade marshmallow fondant

Another sports cake for a great kid!  I’ve made birthday cakes for this sweet boy for many years now.  They’re always sports-themed and just keep getting bigger and more fun!

Anthony’s mom asked for a 2-tiered vintage baseball-themed cake with a worn, vintage look.  The only way to really do that without an airbrush (which I don’t own….yet) was to cover it in fondant and creatively brush on the “dirt” using cocoa powder and a small brush (cocoa powder…who knew?  worked great!).

The base 9″ tier is a 2-layer chocolate cake with mocha filling and the 6″ tier is Italian cream cake with almond buttercream filling.

The cakes are iced with vanilla buttercream and then covered with homemade marshmallow fondant. The details are a combo of fondant, red edible pen (small stitching on baseball), and cocoa powder.

Loved the simple, vintage, worn look of this cake and it was so fun to make…

Happy 14th birthday, Anthony!  Keep being a great kid!

Starbucks-themed Cake

30 Friday Dec 2016

Ok, so this was a strange request for a cake.

One of my regular (and best) customers wanted a special birthday cake for her daughter who happened to love iced coffee from Starbucks.  She initially wondered if I could put a cup of her daughter’s favorite drink right on the cake, but that made me very nervous (liquids and cake DO NOT mix).

So we decided on chocolate mousse in a Starbucks cup to be added right before she presented the cake (in the cup is homemade chocolate mousse with crushed Oreo cookies and whipped cream on top).

The 10″ cake is double-chocolate sour cream with cookies and cream filling and smooth-iced with vanilla-bean buttercream.  The modified Starbucks logo I hand cut from homemade marshmallow fondant, along with the other details.

The cake was certainly a fun challenge….happy birthday, Georgenne!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
