Who doesn’t love chocolate?  Especially X 3?!  This decadent cupcake starts with double chocolate cake (called that because there is both cocoa powder and melted bittersweet chocolate in the batter).  Then it’s filled with creamy chocolate mousse and topped with smooth chocolate buttercream.  Too much chocolate?  Never!  What’s there not to LOVE?

Blue Ombre Pony Birthday Cake

My daughter requested a pony party for her 6th birthday and wanted a simple cake and multi-flavored mini cupcakes.  I made a small 6″ round 3-layer ombre cake with horse figurines on top. (An “ombre cake” is just a layer cake with graded hues of a single color…or different colors, depending on the look you want.)  Since she’s really into blue, I graduated the buttercream colors from dark blue to white.   I topped it with a little “pasture” with the horses and a banner bearing her name.  Perfect for my little cowgirl!

My kids are in the midst of a Minecraft craze (Minecraft is a game on the computer), so I created this cake for a Cub Scout fundraiser.

The cake is a 3-layer 8″ square cake (vanilla and chocolate) covered with chocolate buttercream and crushed Oreo cookies (to look like dirt).  I put a layer of green fondant on top and piped green grass with a grass tip.

The figures are crafted from colored fondant (with the help of my kids) and the name plate is made from pearler beads.   The cake was a HUGE hit with all of the elementary-aged boys and eventually sold for $120 at the event!  If your kid hasn’t discover Minecraft yet, just you wait!

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
