Revisiting an old favorite this week….MINECRAFT LIVES!! This is the cake that started it all 4-plus years ago when I made it for a cakewalk at my kids’ school. It was fun revisiting my buddies Steve, Creeper, and Pig…

I’ve gotten better at making the fondant figures and the cake has gotten a bit bigger, but the basics are the same.

This is a 10″ 2-layer cake (chocolate/vanilla) with cookies and cream filling and chocolate buttercream icing.  The “dirt” on the sides is made from crushed Oreo cookies pressed onto fresh buttercream and the grass is piped vanilla buttercream tinted green.

The figures are handmade from homemade marshmallow fondant.  Believe it or not, I’ve had requests for this cake from as far away as New Zealand! Although I don’t ship the cake, I have sent the fondant figures all over the globe! Apparently  the Mincraft craze is alive and well!

Hope you had a terrific birthday, RJ!!  I really enjoyed making your Minecraft cake!

So, my 12-year-old loves Kit Kat candy bars and M&Ms (who doesn’t?!)….this was his cake last year (finally getting around to posting it).  We somehow managed to only take a few pics, but thought I’d share.

kit-kat-cake-1

It’s an 8″ 3-layer chocolate/vanilla/chocolate cake with milk chocolate buttercream and chocolate mousse filling into which I folded crushed Kit Kat bars. Yum. There was honestly so much sugar here it made my teeth hurt, but since I don’t let my kids eat candy often, I figured I’d give them this treat just once last year.

After the entire cake was frosted, I simply put Kit Kat bars–separated into sections–around the outside (I think it took about 6 full-sized bars). I then filled the top with M&M candies (at this point, I figured “why not?”!).

I tied it with a ribbon and put a chocolate-pretzel candy border around the bottom.

Happy 12th birthday, my SWEET boy!!

Candy anyone!?

I made this for a New Year’s birthday party, but this basket-weave cake is perfect for any celebration where you’d like an elegant presentation.  It’s 3-layers of sour cream almond cake, filled with chocolate mousse and iced with chocolate buttercream then topped with chocolate-covered strawberries and tiny fondant flowers.  It can be done with any flavor cake, icing and filling to fit your occasion.

Hunger Games “Mocking Jay” Birthday Cake!

29 Thursday May 2014

I was called into action once again this year to make a cake based on pop culture for my middle son’s birthday.  Last year it was Minecraft (see previous and varied posts); this year he wanted a “Hunger Games” birthday.  Actually, when describing what he had planned with the other 7 crazy 3rd-grade boys he’d invited for a sleepover (My son: “…we want to have a bunch of random stuff thrown in a bag with some Nerf weapons, run around the yard and hide from each other, make alliances when we can, and look for ways to survive while getting the other guys out….”; Me: “Hmmm, that sounds a lot like the Hunger Games…”).   Thus, the theme for his 9th birthday was born!

After searching on line for a simple cake idea (we didn’t need anything too big), I came across another terrific tutorial by Ann Reardon of “How to Cook That” illustrating how to make the fondant Mocking Jay pin for the top of the cake as well as the sugar flames.  She really does some amazing stuff, all while making it look so simple…check it out if you haven’t already. The Mocking Jay pin, yellow circle, and the letters for the names are all made from homemade marshmallow fondant (it was a combined birthday party with my son and his friend who was also turning 9). The “flames” are made from homemade sugar candy colored yellow and red.  The cake is a 3-layer (chocolate and vanilla) 8-inch round filled with cookie dough filling and covered in chocolate buttercream.

The boys thought it was great and my husband and I survived to live another day!!  I guess the odds WERE in our favor this year!

Minecraft Cake 2.0

Cake, chocolate buttercream frosting, double chocolate cake, fondant, Minecraft, Oreo

My most popular cake to date…who knew?   When I created this design back in February, I had no idea it would become such a huge hit!  Since then, I’ve revised the figures a bit and replaced the fondant top with buttercream, but essentially it’s the same double-chocolate 3-layer cake (or pick your favorite flavor) covered with creamy chocolate buttercream and crushed Oreo cookies. The Minecraft figures on top are made from homemade fondant; the “Minecraft” sign and pick ax are perler beads.

For all of you Minecraft-crazed youth out there….”The Creepers are HERE!  But BEWARE.. HEROBRINE is coming!” (keep watching for version 2.1 ;0).

About Me

Life is crazy and I love to bake. I'm a wife, mother of 3 nutty kids, and an admitted sugar-holic. Ten years ago I left my job as a senior consulting engineer in Salt Lake City, UT, to get out of the rat race and raise kids. We up and moved to a quiet, small town in NE Ohio to be near family and bought a 180-yr-old historic home, always a dream of mine. Along the way, I discovered my joy of baking, which allows both my engineering side and my oft-suppressed creative side to emerge. It began with the desire to bake birthday cakes for my kids (I hated to buy them) and has blossomed into a cupcake-baking business for a local bakery. Over the years, many people have asked if I take orders. So, here they are. Check out the site, we'll be adding new cupcake flavors weekly as well as the occasional cake. And in case you're wondering about the name, it's an homage to the big, old gray barn in my back yard. What a bonus, it came with the house! Put on a smile and BAKE!
